47. SERGEI FYODOROV ARRIVES IN ENGLAND

(At the passport control)

Officer: Your passport, please. 

Sergei: Here you.

Officer: Mr Sergei Fyodorov?

Sergei: Fyodorov, that’s right.

Officer: You coming to Britain as a specialist. How longyou intend to stay?

Sergei: About ten months. I have a Russian government scholarship. Herea letter of recommendation from the University of London.

Officer: I see. you going to stay in London all the time?

Sergei: No, I would like to spend about three months in the Midlands.

Officer: Well, you have a British visa valid for three months. You can extend it later. That’s all. I hope you’ll have a pleasant stay in Britain.

Officer: Thank you very much.

(At the customs)

Officer: this your case?

Sergei: That’s right.

Officer: Have you anything to declare?

Sergei: No, nothing. I have only my personal things and a few books. Oh, and this old camera.

Officer: Could you open your case, please?

Sergei: Here you.

(Bureau of exchange)

Sergei: Good morning. I’d like to change a few dollars into British money. Whatthe current rate of exchange?

Accountant: 2 dollars 10 to a pound.

Sergei: Here50 dollars.

Accountant: 50 dollars. That makes 23 pounds 80. Here you, thank you.

Sergei: Not all the time. Igoing to work at London University for two months, and then I’d like to go to the Midlands, to visit a few factories.

Amy: it really? You speak English very well, Sergei.

Sergei: Thank you, Amy.

Amy:You must very good at languages. I’m afraid, wenot, Alan and I. Russian good to learn?

Sergei: I suppose, itfor an Englishman.

Sergei: Iafraid, it.

Amy:Another cup of tea, Sergei?

Sergei: Yes, please. you always drink it with milk?

Alan:Almost always.

Sergei: We hardly ever drink tea with milk in Russia.

Amy:I know, you put lemon in it. We call that ‘Russian tea’. you like green China tea? We often drink it. It’s very refreshing.

Sergei: We often buy Chinese tea in Russia. But it n’t green tea.

Debby: We must take you to a Chinese restaurant one day, Sergei.

Alan:Oh, a very bright idea, Debby. I know a good place in Soho. What about GOING tonight?

Amy: come with us, Sergei.

Sergei: That’s really kind of you. Thank you very much.

Alan:Now, where can we meet? Where you staying?

Sergei: In a hotel, not very far from here.

Alan:Well then, let’s meet at your hotel at 7:30 (half past seven).

Sergei: Good.

Amy:By the way,your hotel comfortable, Sergei?

Sergei: Not very, Iafraid. And it’s rather expensive. I’d like to find a private room.
