80. ALAN WANTS TO HELP
Alan: You know, you oughtn’t to do any work yet, Amy. I want you
to sit in this armchair and relax. I’ll do all the housework today. Only
you must tell me what to do.
Amy: That’s very kind of you, darling.
Alan: Well, what
you want me to do first? Clean the windows?
Wash the floors?
Amy: Of course not! But you must do the rooms. Start with the
bedroom. Make the beds first. And I want you to clean the carpets. The vacuum cleaner
in the hall under the stairs.
Alan: you want me to fetch it now?
Amy: No, wait. First open the cupboard in the bedroom, take out two
towels and take them into the bathroom.
Alan: All right.
Amy: And talking of the bathroom, it’s in an awful state. You
n’t cleaned it at all since I went to hospital, you, Alan?
Alan: No, I suppose In’t. You never told me to do that.
Amy:

Amy: that you, Alan? In’t hear you come in. Look what Igot here!
Alan: Oh, a tortoise!

Amy: Nonsense, Alan!
Alan: Good heavens! It moves!
Amy: Of course it moves! It’s a real tortoise!
Alan: Howit get here?
Amy: Somebody left it at the door.
Alan: Who?
Amy: In’t know. It
about eleven o’clock. I heard the
telephone ring and came downstairs to answer it. Then I heard the door
bell. I couldn’t open the door at once because of the phone. When I opened it a little later therenobody there. When I
looked along the street I saw a man turn the corner.
Alan: that a postman?
Amy: No, itn’t. Then I noticed a box at the door. I picked it up and heard something moving in it. I opened the box and there
this tortoise!
Alan: the box addressed to us?
Amy: No, itn’t.
Alan: It must 
a mistake. What
you going to do with the
tortoise?
Amy: Why? Keep it, of course. Jeena
look after it. It’s indeed a
nice little thing! Never in a hurry. It reminds me a very good saying.
Alan: What saying?
Amy: “n’t put off till tomorrow”…
Alan: “what you can do today”!
Amy: No darling. “What you can do the day after tomorrow”.

Amy: Oh, Debby! I’m so glad you’ve come! There’s so much I want
to tell you.
Debby: I really came to ask about your health, Amy. Iaway when you

something I want to ask you. The tortoise.
Alan: The tortoise?
Debby: Yes,n’t you get it? I asked a man from my office to
take it to you yesterday.
Alan: Well, now everythingclear. You know Debby, that man n’t tell us anything. He just put the box down at the door and
walked off.
Amy: Thanks for the lovely present, Debby. Whereyou get the
tortoise?
Debby: I brought it from Bulgaria last week.
Alan: And… whereyou going next?
Debby: Theysending me to Cairo next week.
Alan: To Cairo? I hope you n’t thinking of SENDING us a
