95. THE JOB FOR AMY

 

Amy: Here a book I told you about, Debby. It’s called “Things We

Never Dream About” by Martin Astell. It’s extremely good! You simply must

read it.

Debby: How long may I keep it?

Amy:Oh, as long as you like. The friend I got it fromjust gone away and won’tback till the end of the month. You can keep it till then.

Debby: Thanks. By the way, Amy, you still thinking of GETTING a job, aren’t you?

Amy:Why, of course.

Debby: How would you like to work in a library?

Amy:A library? Where? What sort of a library?

Debby: A children’s library, in Camden. You remember Caroline Breech, n’t you?

Amy:The girl I stayed with in Hastings 5 years ago.

Debby: Well, she knows the man whoin charge of that library. She heard from him that therea vacancy there. He looking for some sort of a person who would handling the library’s database.

Amy:Iafraid Inot the sort they looking for. I know very

little about library work. 

Debby: Oh, theyn’t need a qualified librarian. Caroline made it

quite clear. I think you have a very good chance of GETTING a

job. Shall I give you Mr Friedman’s telephone?

Amy:WhoMr Friedman?

Debby: The man Caroline talking about, you future boss.

Caroline says he’s very charming.

Amy:Hm…It might nice to have a charming boss. It’ll make Alan a

little jealous.

Debby: As far as I know Mr Friedman over 60, rather fat and

completely bald.

Amy:Oh, he? So, Alan n’t need to know about it,he?

Alan: you know what time it, Amy? Half past ten. I 

n’t know children’s libraries stayed open as late as that.

I thought you finished work at five.

Amy:Oh, Alan,n’t I call you?

Alan: Yes, you. Only to tell me you not coming home yet.

Amy:Oh, I couldn’t start EXPLAINING everything on the phone, could I?

Alan: Suppose you start EXPLAINING now.

Amy:Iif you stop MAKING faces at me.

Alan: I not making faces.

Amy:Well, never mind. I spent a most interesting evening.

I met...  Can you guess whom I met?

 

Alan: How can I? Go on, Amy.

 

Amy:I met Russell Preston.

 

Alan: Russell Preston? Where?

Amy:At the London Book Fair. I buying some books for the library. He seemed awfully pleased to see me.

Alan: Indeed?

Amy:He asked me to have a drink with him and then we had dinner together. It very nice.

Alan: But Amy, you said youn’t like him. After that party at the Swindons you said youn’t want to see him again. You said he a frightful bore.

Amy: I? Well, I liked him today. But it only shows how men change, n’t it?

Alan: Hallo darling!

Amy:Oh, here you at last! Why you looking so pleased with yourself? And what are all these parcels?

Alan: You’ll see in a moment. Here! A bottle of wine, chocolate…

Amy:And what’s this?

Alan: Caviar. You like it,n’t you, Amy?

Amy:Very much. What the meaning of all this? Why you want me to eat caviar with chocolate?

Alan: I want us to have a little celebration tonight.

Amy:To celebrate what?

Alan: You remember that old Bruce,n’t you? He retiring.

Amy:Oh, I thought heretired long ago. But why should we celebrate his retirement?

Alan: Not his retirement but my promotion, darling.

Amy:Oh!

Alan: Yes, I’m taking over Mr Bruce’s job. And that means a rise, you know.

Amy:That’s really wonderful, Alan! Whenyou learn about this?

Alan: This morning. Mr Hanger called me to his room and said hedecided to give me Mr Bruce’s job. In’t expected it at all!

Amy:Oh, Alan, I’m so glad! Now what we going to do with extra money? Thereso many things we need.

Alan: I’m sure you’ll find some way of SPENDING the money, darling. You’re so good at it.

Amy:That n’t a very nice thing to say, Alan. But you’ll see how sensible I may if I try.
