29. A POUND OF MATCHES

Amy: you going out, Alan?

Alan: Yes, I. Why?

Amy: Well, I’ve just washed my hair. I can’t go out. Please do some SHOPPING for me.

Alan: Must I?

Amy: Oh,good darling and do it for me.

Alan: All right. Give me our shopping bag.

Amy: Just a minute. I n’t told you what to buy yet.

Alan: No, you n’t.

Amy: I need a lot of things today. Now, a pound of sugar…

Alan:  (singing) Sugar in the morning, sugar in the evening, sugar at a supper time.

Amy: Stop it, Alan! I’ll tell you what to buy.

Alan: All right, all right, go on!

Amy: A pound of sugar, a tin of sardines. A big one. A packet of tea, a jar of jam, three packets of rolled oats for your porridge…

Alan: Porridge? Bah….

Amy: Oh, and some matches. Yes, six boxes of matches.

Alan: we got any bread?

Amy: Oh yes, you can buy a loaf of bread. A smaller one. And six eggs, please. And a carton of milk. That’s all.

Alan: you sure?

Amy: It’s got very shabby lately.

Alan: it? In’t noticed that. It’s a very comfortable suit.

Amy: You really have to pay more attention to your clothes.

Alan: All right, darling. But we mustn’t spend money on my new suit for me now. I’ve spent a lot on the car lately.

Amy: you?

Alan: Yes. I’ve just bought new tires.

Amy: Well. Wen’t need a very expensive suit.

Alan: Besides, wegoing to have other expenses.

Amy: What other expenses?

Alan: Look at the house. We ought to paint it. And paintnot cheap at all, itjust gone up.

Amy: Oh, the houseall right. You’ve just painted the windows, and the walls can wait.

Alan: Yes, but there’re a lot of repairs to do.

Amy: Well, repairs can wait too. Listen, darling. Yougoing to order a new suit tomorrow. What’s more, yougoing to buy a new hat.

Alan: A new hat? What’s wrong with my old one? It’s very comfortable.

Shop assistant:Oh yes, I can get it out for you, madam. Here it ! A very smart hat! Try it on, madam.

Amy: It’s too big. I need a smaller size.

Shop assistant:Herea smaller one. It’s a very pretty shade of green.

Amy: It’s quite nice! But, perhaps, you’ve got a darker green.

Shop assistant:Isorry, madam. Wen’t got dark green hats. But I’ve a lovely black hat here. It’s just right for you.

Amy: A black hat? No. What about that blue one in the other window?

Shop assistant:Which one, madam? This one?

Amy: That’s right.

Shop assistant:Try it on, madam. It’s a beautiful little hat.

Amy: Itpretty, but ittoo small.  you got a bigger one?

Shop assistant:Isorry, we n’t. But we can order one for you.

Amy: Can you? Perhaps, that’s a good idea. But I must think about it first. Good bye!

Shop assistant:Thank you, madam. Good bye!

(Alan buys a hat)

Alan: Morning. I want a hat.

Alan: Eight.

Shop assistant:What colour, sir?

Alan: What colour? Bright.

Shop assistant:What about this one, sir?

Alan: It’s all right. How muchit?

Shop assistant:19 pounds 50 pence, sir.

Alan: Can I pay in cash?

Shop assistant:Certainly, sir.

Alan: Herethe money. Thank you, good bye.
