                             98. PROFESSOR ATTKINS’ HAT

 

Amy: Howyou, Professor Attkins? It’s very kind of you to come to see us.

Alan: We’ve heard a lot about you from Sergei.

Professor: Sergeitold me a lot about you, too. Ivery glad to meet you.

Alan:Shall I look after you hat and coat, Professor?

Professor: Please,. Andn’t let me go without them. The other

day I had a lot of trouble with that hat of mine.

Amy: Really? tell us about it, Professor.

Professor: Well, it like this. I wanted to go out and couldn’t find my hat. I tried to remember where I earlier in the day. I remembered I in my rooms at the university. So I went there to look for my hat. I not find it. But I found my umbrella which Ilost a week before.

 

 

Alan: How fortunate!

Professor:Yes, n’t it? But my hat still missing. On my way home

I looked in  (to look in = to drop in - заглянуть; заскочить куда-л.) at my favorite coffee bar. The hat n’t there. But I found my glasses which I

left there that morning.

Alan: Lucky again, Professor! Whereyou go next?

Professor:Oh, I tired of the whole thing. So I went to my barber’s to have my hair cut.  Andyou know what the man said to me? " Would you mind TAKING off your hat first, Professor?"

                              99. ALAN SUFFERS FROM INSOMNIA

Alan:Whyyou keep LOOKING out of the window, Amy?

Amy:I amwatching out for Aunt Gwen. She said she would come at about 5.

Alan:Oh really? She here only yesterday. And you promised

you  wouldn’t invite her more than once a week.

 

 

Amy:She’s my only aunt, you know.

 

Alan:In any case, why must you look out of the window? Can’t she ring the

bell?

Amy:Shen’t want to disturb you.

Alan:Disturb me? Why should the bell disturb me?

Amy:Well, I told her you should asleep.

Alan:Asleep at 5 in the afternoon? Why?

Amy:I said you weresuffering from insomnia and you’d probably go to bed

after tea.

 

Alan:What a funny idea!

 

Amy:I thought ishould stop her from COMING to see us today.

Alan:You ought ashamed of yourself, Amy, by MAKING up a silly story like that. But look, n’t it Aunt Gwen just coming up round the

corner?

Amy:Yes, it must . There’s only one hat like that in London.

 

 

Alan:Well, then. I think I’ll just go and have a little nap. (to have a little nap

-немножко вздремнуть).

Amy:What you mean?

Alan:Well, you said I would asleep, n’t you? Give my regards to auntie. And n’t forget to tell her that my insomnia isgetting much worse.

insomnia.

Whatshe say about Alan GOING to bed? – Shsaid he would probably go to bed after tea.

Whyshe say all that? – She thought all that would stop Aunt Gwen from

COMING to see them today.

What Alan decide he would do? – He decided he would go and have a little nap.

                                   100. THE MILLERS’ BOY RUNS AWAY

 

Amy:Oh dear, oh dear! Poor Mrs Miller!

Alan:What it this time?

Amy:It’s this boy of hers again. He’s run away.

Alan:Youn’t say. Whenit happen?

Amy:They’ve missed him this morning. When Mrs Miller went to Jack’s room to wake him he n’t there.

Alan:So he ran away during the night?

Amy:It looks like it. Mrs Miller found a note on his desk. It said he going to try to get to Russia. He wanted the first man to fly to Mars.

Alan:Well, what an enterprising (предприимчивый)  young man!

 

Amy:He asked his mum not to worry. He promised he would write to her

soon.

Alan:Thisa pretty kettle of fish (весёленькая история!). Now why he do it, I wonder?

Amy:Mrs Jones says he did it because of his school report. Heafraid his father would very angry with him.

Alan: he have a lot of money with him?

Amy:About 10 pounds.

Alan:He won’t get very far on that. the Millers called the police? 

 

Amy:Yes, of course. Mrs Miller rang at the police station at once. They said

they would look for the boy everywhere. 

Alan:Oh well, I’m sure theyfind him. n’t so upset about

 

it, darling. You always take things too much to heart.
